Connecticut IFTA
Before the introduction IFTA, commercial vehicles and trucks would need independent tax permits for each of the states that they were driving through. Port-of-Entry collection stations were erected for them to gather the tax owed according to that states own private fuel tax laws. This created more work for the states and stalled interstate commerce for trucking organizations. When registering for the IFTA, you should take into account your vehicle type, location, and tax preparation method.
When you subscribe for IFTA you will accomplish this in a specific district, for example the state of California. It will be in this jurisdiction that you index your IFTA fuel report and receive either your tax refund or pay any fuel tax owed. The jurisdiction which you need to register for IFTA can be where the qualifying automobile is registered, where you have an established physical business, or where you file the operational records for that qualifying vehicle. The exact form number that you need to seek will depend on the territory that your applying in. On your fuel tax report form you should record any jurisdictions taking part in the IFTA that you have traveled through and the fuel that you paid for in that jurisdiction.

For you to determine if your vehicle meets the requirements and can take part in the IFTA, you need to have what is named a qualifying vehicle. A qualifying vehicle is one that delivers either people or commercial goods. It should also meet the following requirements: have 3 axles or more, or have 2 axles or more and weigh at least 26,000 lbs, or when used as a combination and weigh beyond 26,000 lbs. You should contact the motor carrier vehicle section of that jurisdiction and ask to make an application for an IFTA license and decals to feature on your auto. Once complete, you should repay it to the regulating body with the requested processing fee. Assuming that you meet the criteria for IFTA, you will be issued with the correct license and decals. You are now registered to enter into the IFTA program.

IFTA significantly simplified the payment of fuel tax for trucks traveling through more than one state. It is important to make sure that you stay in compliance with IFTA regulations. Penalties and fines might be applied to commercial vehicles and trucks which are not properly registered or who do not file the fuel tax report forms on the due dates.
