Idaho IFTA

Prior to the introduction IFTA, commercial vehicles and trucks would need independent tax permits for each of the states that they were driving through. Port-of-Entry collection stations were erected so as to gather the tax owed according to that states own particular fuel tax laws. This created more work for the states and slowed interstate commerce for trucking business. When registering for the IFTA, you should take into consideration your vehicle type, location, and tax preparation method.

When you register for IFTA you will accomplish this in a specific place, for example the state of California. It will be in this jurisdiction that you submit your IFTA fuel report and obtain either your tax refund or pay any fuel tax owed. The jurisdiction which you need to register for IFTA can be where the qualifying automobile is registered, where you have an established physical place of business, or where you file the operational records for that qualifying vehicle. The exact form number that you need to seek will depend on the jurisdiction that your applying in. On your fuel tax report form you should record any jurisdictions participating in the IFTA that you have traveled through and the fuel that you bought in that jurisdiction.

For you to determine if your vehicle meets the requirements and can participate in the IFTA, you need to have what is referred to as a qualifying vehicle. A qualifying vehicle is one that moves either people or commercial goods. It should also meet the following standards: have 3 axles or more, or have 2 axles or more and weigh greater than 26,000 lbs, or when used as a combination and weigh a lot more than 26,000 lbs. You should speak to the motor carrier vehicle section of that jurisdiction and ask to apply for an IFTA license and decals to feature on your car. Once complete, you should return it to the regulating body with the required processing fee. Assuming that you meet the requirements for IFTA, you will be issued with the correct license and decals. You are now registered to participate in the IFTA program.

Once your record form has been processed, any net tax or payment that is due to you will be determined, in addition to the fuel taxes that are redistributed to those states where they are due. You should be given a fuel tax report form to the mailing address which you listed when you registered for IFTA. However if you did not you can speak to the automotive vehicle carrier department in your local jurisdiction.
