Michigan Oversize Permit

The heavy-duty vehicles and loads associateded with commercial trucking services are essentially required to, under the Act 300 of Michigan Vehicle Code (MVC) of Public Acts of 1949, execute their business as per the constraints as established by this Act. The vehicles and loads that can not be minimized in their size and can not be transported other than by road are mandated to obtain permits from the reigon’s local Department of Transportation (DOT). All transportation permits will need to be obtained from State Transport Authorities by any individual or organization associateded with commercial trucking services if they transport loads more than just normal legal limits. You can get more related information about the legally-permitted sizes of vehicles and forms of transportation permits available from your local department of transportation.

Temporary operation permits have been issued since 1992. If a business only needs a permit to operate over a designated period, Temporary Testing, Demonstration, and Temporary Operation Permits may be required. You can obtain them from all the outlets of Auto plan and any government inspection stations (weigh scales). You are enabled to perform general transportation ventures for anywhere from one day to two weeks using this permit, but there are certain regulations to use this permit for commercial activities.

Vehicles and trucks that are hauling loads of excessive size or weight over legal limits and are busy in operating transportation activities on public highways are required to obtain oversize permits when their loads that can not be decreased in size. These permits can be obtained upon written application from the Commercial Transport section of Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch. Oversize permits are obtainable not only for the vehicles or loads that are 4.4 meters wide, but for wider vehicles also. The information of the commodity being transported alongside reasons of non-reducible size need to be provided with the application of this permit.

Oversize permits are also assigned on the basis of axle size of the truck, as there are certain constraints on the load-per-axle to assess the need of the transportation permit. A load that goes above the limit per-axle is considered as being over-weighted or oversized, instead of considering the overall weight of the load. Suppose your commercial vehicle transports construction machinery, pre-built homes, construction materials, or containers. It’s weight caps are then relied on weight limits per-axle to be eligible for this permit.
