The heavy-duty vehicles and loads associateded with commercial trucking services are basically required to, under the Act 300 of Michigan Vehicle Code (MVC) of Public Acts of 1949, act out their business as per the restrictions as established by this Act. The vehicles and loads that can not be minimized in their size and can not be transported other than by road are asked to obtain permits from the reigon’s local Department of Transportation (DOT). All transportation permits have to be obtained from State Transport Authorities by any individual or organization involved in commercial trucking services if they transport loads more than just normal legal limits. You can get more relevant information about the legally-permitted sizes of vehicles and kinds of transportation permits available from your local department of transportation.

Temporary operation permits have been released since 1992. If a business only needs a permit to operate over a designated period of time, Temporary Testing, Demonstration, and Temporary Operation Permits may be required. You can acquire them from all the outlets of Auto plan and any government inspection stations (weigh scales). You are allowed to perform general transportation endeavors for anywhere from 1 day to two weeks using this permit, but there are certain regulations to use this permit for commercial activities.

Vehicles and trucks that are carrying loads of excessive size or weight over legal limits and are busy in operating transportation activities on public highways are mandated to obtain oversize permits when their loads that can not be reduced in size. These permits can be obtained upon written application from the Commercial Transport section of Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch. Oversize permits are provided not only for the vehicles or loads that are 4.4 meters wide, but for wider vehicles also. The particulars of the commodity being transported along with reasons of non-reducible size must be provided with the application of the permit.

Oversize permits are also assigned on the basis of axle size of the vehicle, as there are certain restrictions on the load-per-axle to assess the need of this transportation permit. A load that goes beyond the limit per-axle is considered as over-weighted or oversized, instead of considering the overall weight of the load. Suppose your commercial vehicle transports construction machinery, pre-built homes, construction materials, or containers. It’s weight caps are then calculated on weight limits per-axle to become eligible for this permit.
