The heavy-duty vehicles and loads involved in commercial trucking services are basically required to, under the Act 300 of Michigan Vehicle Code (MVC) of Public Acts of 1949, act out their business as per the limits as established by this Act. The vehicles and loads that can not be lessened in their size and can not be transported other than by road are asked to obtain permits from the reigon’s local Department of Transportation (DOT). All transportation permits must be obtained from State Transport Authorities by any individual or organization involved in commercial trucking services if they transport loads more than normal legal limits. You can get more details about the legally-permitted sizes of vehicles and forms of transportation permits attainable from your local department of transportation.

Temporary operation permits have been provided since 1992. If a business only needs a permit to operate over a designated period of time, Temporary Testing, Demonstration, and Temporary Operation Permits may be required. You can obtain them from all the outlets of Auto plan and any government inspection stations (weigh scales). You are permitted to perform general transportation tasks for anywhere from one day to two weeks using this permit, but there are certain constraints to use this permit for commercial activities.

Vehicles and trucks that are delivering loads of excessive size or weight above legal limits and are busy in operating transportation ventures on public highways are mandated to obtain oversize permits when their loads that can not be minimized in size. These permits are obtained upon written request from the Commercial Transport section of Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch. Oversize permits are available not only for the vehicles or loads that are 4.4 meters wide, but also for wider vehicles also. The information of the commodity being transported in addition to reasons of non-reducible size need to be provided with the application of this permit.

Oversize permits are also issued on the basis of axle size of the truck, as there are certain restrictions on the load-per-axle to assess the need of the transportation permit. A load that goes beyond the limit per-axle is considered as over-weighted or oversized, instead of considering the overall weight of the load. Suppose your commercial vehicle transports construction machinery, pre-built homes, construction materials, or containers. It’s weight caps are then depended weight limits per-axle to be eligible for this permit.
