The heavy-duty vehicles and loads associateded with commercial trucking services are essentially required to, under the Act 300 of Michigan Vehicle Code (MVC) of Public Acts of 1949, produce their business as per the limits as established by this Act. The vehicles and loads that can not be minimized in their size and can not be transported other than by road are demanded to obtain permits from the reigon’s local Department of Transportation (DOT). All transportation permits should be obtained from State Transport Authorities by any individual or organization involved in commercial trucking services if they transport loads more than normal legal limits. You can get more details about the legally-permitted sizes of vehicles and sorts of transportation permits available from your local department of transportation.

Temporary operation permits have been provided since 1992. If a business only needs a permit to operate over a designated period of time, Temporary Testing, Demonstration, and Temporary Operation Permits may be required. You can secure them from all the outlets of Auto plan and any government inspection stations (weigh scales). You are allowed to perform general transportation tasks for anywhere from 1 day to two weeks using this permit, but there are certain constraints to use this permit for commercial activities.

Vehicles and trucks that are transporting loads of excessive size or weight above legal limits and are busy in operating transportation ventures on public highways are needed to obtain oversize permits when their loads that can not be decreased in size. These permits can be obtained upon written inquiry from the Commercial Transport section of Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch. Oversize permits are offered not only for the vehicles or loads that are 4.4 meters wide, but for wider vehicles also. The details of the commodity being transported coupled with reasons of non-reducible size will need to be provided with the application of this permit.

Oversize permits are also released on the basis of axle size of the truck, as there are certain limits on the load-per-axle to assess the need of this transportation permit. A load that goes above the limit per-axle is considered as over-weighted or oversized, rather than considering the overall weight of the load. Suppose your commercial vehicle transports construction machinery, pre-built homes, construction materials, or containers. It’s weight limitations are then relied on weight limits per-axle to be eligible for this permit.

The pilot car has to mount on its roof top a sign of Long Load, Wide Load or Oversize Load to warn other passing by vehicles.
