The heavy-duty vehicles and loads involved in commercial trucking services are ultimately required to, under the Act 300 of Michigan Vehicle Code (MVC) of Public Acts of 1949, perform their business as per the restrictions as established by this Act. The vehicles and loads that can not be lowered in their size and can not be transported other than by road are required to obtain permits from the reigon’s local Department of Transportation (DOT). All transportation permits should be obtained from State Transport Authorities by any individual or organization involved in commercial trucking services if they transport loads beyond normal legal limits. You can get more relevant information about the legally-permitted sizes of vehicles and kinds of transportation permits attainable from your local department of transportation.

Temporary operation permits have been released since 1992. If a business only needs a permit to operate over a designated period of time, Temporary Testing, Demonstration, and Temporary Operation Permits may be required. You can get them from all the outlets of Auto plan and any government inspection stations (weigh scales). You are enabled to perform general transportation projects for anywhere from one day to two weeks with this permit, but there are certain stipulations to use this permit for commercial activities.

Vehicles and trucks that are shipping loads of excessive size or weight beyond legal limits and are busy in operating transportation activities on public highways are obligated to obtain oversize permits when their loads that can not be lowered in size. These permits can be obtained upon written request from the Commercial Transport section of Commercial Vehicle Safety and Enforcement Branch. Oversize permits are provided not only for the vehicles or loads that are 4.4 meters wide, but also for wider vehicles also. The information of the commodity being transported in addition to reasons of non-reducible size must be provided with the application of this permit.

A load that goes beyond the limit per-axle is considered as over-weighted or oversized, as opposed to considering the overall weight of the load. Suppose your commercial vehicle transports construction machinery, pre-built homes, construction materials, or containers. It’s weight restricts are then depended weight limits per-axle to be eligible for this permit.

A Wide load permit is required to be attained by pilot cars not exceeding 5,500 kg in gross vehicle weight, and are allowed for single commercial transportation when the length of load being transported exceeds 27.5 meter and width exceeds 3.2 meters. The pilot car will need to mount on its roof top a sign of Long Load, Wide Load or Oversize Load to warn other passing by vehicles.
